The Oregon Relays offered Oregon’s senior high jump duo of Lauren Crockett and Chancey Summers another tune up before the NCAA Championships in June.
Crockett and Summers both cleared 5 feet, 9 inches, but Summers needed three attempts to pass, while Crockett cleared the bar on her second attempt, giving her the nod in the tiebreaker over her teammate.
“I was kind of all over the place today,” Summers said. “My third attempt at 5-10 felt a lot better, but it was one of those days where I felt like I was just making heights. I wasn’t soaring over anything, so it’s kind of frustrating.”
Both jumpers failed to clear 5-10, well below their respective PRs of 6-0 3/4 and 6-0, but Crockett didn’t seem too concerned about her performance this early in the season.
“There was nothing really specific I was working on today,” Crockett said. “Just fine tuning everything.”
Windy conditions may have taken their toll on the event as well.
“I think we definitely had to move our marks back, but that’s something you have to prepare for outdoors,” Crockett said. “We practice out here all of the time, and usually the wind is all over the place. So I think we’re pretty used to moving our marks accordingly.”
“It’s a lot better than having a headwind,” Summers said. “I’ll take a tailwind any day over a headwind.”
Veteran jumper Alison Wood of the Oregon Track Club finished third by clearing 5-4. Oregon’s Ashlee Moore failed to clear the first height of 5-2 after participating in a heptathlon the day before, and a 100-meter hurdle race just moments before the start of the high jump.
