Great Britain’s Charlie Grice won the men’s national mile with a time of 3 minutes, 52.64 seconds, a personal best, at the Prefontaine Classic on Saturday.
He took the lead going into the straightaway coming out of the final turn on the third lap.
Grice said he was happy with his race, and he didn’t have to think too much about it. “I knew I’d be on for a good mile time,” he said. “The splits were really good as well.”
He said he’s at a different level from this last year to this year. “I kind of develop in winning races. That’s what it’s all about. It’s not about the time,” he said. “I’ll be a champion — I’ve got time.”
He said he needs to e in his “best shape” in August, for Great Britain’s Olympic trials.
Ethiopia’s Dawit Wolde placed second with a time of 3:55.80, about two seconds behind. Wolde said, “I wanted to go faster, but still, there are some guys that are stronger.”
U.S. runner Jordan McNamara placed third with a time of 3:58.28. He was six seconds from the winner.
