Men’s Discus Ends in Exciting Fashion

Piotr Malachowski of Poland won the men’s discus on his last throw Friday night at the Prefontaine Classic.

Also the 2010 Pre Classic winner, Malachowski’s winning throw was 215 feet, 2 inches (65.59 meters).

It was payback of sorts as he edged out countryman Robert Urbanek, who finished second with a throw of  214-7 (65.42), his season best. The 27-year-old Urbanek had beaten Malachowski in the 2014 European Championship in Zurich, at which he took the bronze medal.

Vikas Gowda of India saved his best for last as his sixth attempt traveled a total distance of 211-4 (64.41), good enough for third.

Perennial favorite Gerd Kanter of Estonia finished fifth.
