DOHA, Qatar — The most noteworthy thing that happened on the first day of the IAAF World Track and Field Championships actually wrapped up on the second day.

The women’s marathon, which started at 11:59 p.m. Friday, continued until the wee hours of Saturday morning, with athletes continually dropping out because of the heat (91 degrees at the start) and the humidity (73 percent at the start). Alex Castle and Nate Mann pulled all-nighters to cover the event.

Alex, writing for the Oregonian, focused on Carrie Dimoff of Portland, a non-elite runner for the Bowerman Track Club who finished 13th under grueling conditions. Nate captured the entire race, which was won by Kenyan Ruth Chepngetich, for our own SOJC Track website.

Brooklynn Loiselle, writing for DyeStat, caught up with the four U.S. runners in the women’s 800-meter field, including two with local ties: former University of Oregon star Raevyn Rogers, who cruised to victory in her preliminary heat, and Oregon Track Club Elite runner Hanna Green, who injured her hamstring Monday in training and was the only one of the four to not advance to the semifinals. (Bureau chief Lori Shontz made a cameo appearance, updating Brooklynn’s story with U.S. marathon results.)

Nate Mann detailed more about Green’s injury for our hometown Register-Guard, and Brett Taylor expanded our bureau’s coverage, providing video of post-race interviews for DyeStat.
