What happened at worlds: Day Three

As Brooklynn Loiselle wrote for DyeStat on Monday, the big story on Day Three of the IAAF World Track and Field Championships was the return of two stars who are back in top form after giving birth. (I’m resisting the easy play on Mother’s Day here. You’re welcome.)

As part of the world-record breaking, gold-medal winning 4×400-mixed relay team, Allyson Felix won her 12th world title, surpassing Usain Bolt as the track and field athlete with the most world championships. And Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Price won the 100 meters in 10.71 seconds, the fastest time in the world this year.

On the local front, it was hard to see former University of Oregon sprinter English Gardner go down with an injury in her 100-meter semifinal, but it was heartening to see two of her competitors in the heat, U.S. teammate Morolake Akinosun and Great Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith, walk up the track to comfort her. Nate Mann set the scene for our website.

The happier news locally came in the men’s 800 meters, in which Donovan Brazier and Clayton Murphy, both of the Nike Oregon Project, advanced to Tuesday’s final along with a third American, Bryce Hoppel. Nate covered the story for our website, and Alex Castle wrote it for the Oregonian, along with updates on all of the other Oregon-connected athletes.

Brett Taylor continued to do video interviews from the mixed zone for DyeStat, and you can catch up on this work here.
