Lake Oswego’s Mia Brahe-Pedersen pushed past Lily Jones of Roosevelt in the last 25 meters of the girls’ 100-meter dash on Saturday at the Oregon Relays, winning with a time of 11.34, a new personal best for the 10th grader and just .04 off the Oregon state record of 11.30 set in 1968.

Jones, who led the first part of the race, finished .10 behind Brahe-Pedersen with a time of 11.44 – also a personal record.

“I knew that it was gonna be a good day,” Jones said. “Mia and I love competing against each other. We just kept saying, we’re going 1 and 2.”

Brahe-Pedersen’s and Jones’ 1-2 finish is commonplace for the runners, who have been dominating the high school 100-meter dash this season. The race pattern – with Jones starting off hard and Brahe-Pedersen finishing hard – is also typical for them.

“Her starts are blazing, like I’ve never seen her start like that,” said Brahe-Pedersen. “And then my top end is where I thrive, like that’s just my thing. So we’re really opposite runners, but the way we do it complements each other really well.”

The PRs come just a few weeks into the race season, leaving both runners excited for what the next months will bring.

“It feels like it’s just the beginning,” said Brahe-Pedersen. “I’ve always had really big goals for my 10th grade season, and I know if I keep pushing and pushing, I’m gonna get those goals I’ve set for myself.”
