Marta Freitas of Brooks Beast won the women’s 800-meter invitational Saturday evening at the Oregon Relays held at Hayward Field, taking the lead at 200 meters en route to a time of 2 minutes, 5.18 seconds.

She held off Oregon freshman Ella Nelson, who posted a time of 2:06.66.

The 2020 NCAA national champion in the 1,500, Freitas has her eyes set on returning to Hayward and competing for Portugal at the World Athletics Championships in July.

Freitas, who has battled with the idea of hanging up her spikes, has her teammates to lean on during challenging times. “Team makes the whole difference,” she said.

Freitas said that if her relationship with track hadn’t improved, she would have retired after the Tokyo Olympics.

“I don’t need track, I choose to do track,” said Freitas.
