Men’s 100: Morris bests Eaton

The Oregon Twilight Meet at Hayward Field featured the return of Olympic gold medalist Ashton Eaton and the debut of Portland transplant Joe Morris.

Morris and Eaton ran next to each other in the 100-meter dash, which Morris won with a wind-aided time of 10.11 seconds. Eaton finished second in 10.20.

Morris, who three months ago relocated from Boulder, Colorado, to Portland, Oregon, to train with Ryan Bailey, a silver medalist in the 4×400 relay in the 2012 Games, was pleased with his performance as he looks to make the 2015 world championships in Beijing.

“It was a good time,”he said. “We were shooting for wind legal, but it was a win.”

Eaton said the race added value as he prepares to defend his decathlon gold medal at the 2016 Olympic Games.

“These races are good going into the heptathlon and the decathlon,” he said, “so that I can knock the rust off for the next event.”
