Men’s Long Jump: Rest pays off for DeVaughn

After taking the lead on the second jump, University of Portland junior Nathan DeVaughn knew that the reduced practice schedule made the difference at the Oregon Twilight Meet on Friday afternoon at Hayward Field.

Despite a back injury which has bothered him for the last three meets, DeVaughn jumped 23 feet, ½ inch to win the long jump, his best jump of this season. He said he has been using a lot of heat and also doing more stretches.

“The season is winding down and we wanted to take the last few weeks to keep things light,” he said. “We did a couple of runthroughs, but no more lifting nor more heavy intensive stuff.

Pacific senior Budweiser Hawkins III finished second with 22-7 ¼
